Summer Series: Issue 6 – Finding Your People

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s more important than ever to intentionally build your circle: the people who energize, support, and inspire you. Whether you’re navigating a new school year, juggling multiple roles, or simply trying to stay grounded, the people around you play a big role in your well-being. Relationships take effort, especially when we’re pulled in so many directions. In this issue, we’ll explore why cultivating a strong, values-aligned circle matters, creative ways to connect, and resources to explore with your people.

Before you pour more energy into your circle, take a moment to reflect. These five questions can help you assess your connections:

  • Who gives you energy
  • Who allows you to show up as your whole self?
  • Who makes you laugh or brings you joy?
  • Who mentors you and offers wisdom or perspective?
  • What boundaries do you need to set around energy-draining interactions?

3 Ways to Intentionally Build Your Circle

1) Make the effort to connect with someone new.
Whether you’re starting at a new school or welcoming new teammates, be the one to initiate a hello, a coffee break, or a lunch invite. Meaningful friendships often begin with small, intentional steps.

2) Plan time with colleagues without a task.
We often bond during unstructured moments. Create opportunities for connection with no agenda: take a walk, grab lunch, or start a Friday tradition with your team. These casual hangouts can build the trust and camaraderie that carry us through tougher days.

3) Seek mentorship at any stage.
You don’t have to be in your first year to need a mentor. Think about someone in education you admire and reach out. Share honestly, ask questions, and talk through the challenges and joys of the work. Mentorship can be a game changer, no matter where you are in your career.
