AmeriCorps Members Make a Difference Around the Country

AmeriCorps members are hard at work right now getting things done for communities throughout our country.  From responding to wildfires in California, to providing hurricane disaster relief in Florida, to helping improve the quality of urban education, AmeriCorps members are making a difference in people’s lives throughout the country.

AmeriCorps St. Louis is busy helping Californians recover from a dangerous fire.  Many homes have been destroyed, so the AmeriCorps members are helping with human and animal sheltering.  AmeriCorps members are also running points of distribution and engaging in volunteer tracking. This vital work is helping the people of California bounce-back from one of the most deadly wildfires in California history.

AmeriCorps St. Louis members are also hard at work on disaster relief in Florida.  Many Floridians have been forced to abandon their homes due to damage, so AmeriCorps members are removing damaged trees and helping with roof tarping.  This will help Floridians return to their homes as soon as possible. Check out more about the great work AmeriCorps St. Louis is doing on their Facebook page.

Another place where AmeriCorps members are making a difference is right here in Kansas City. Through the The Educator Academy program, AmeriCorps members have committed to working in urban schools, helping children gain the necessary skills to become successful adults.  Residents immerse themselves in a learning year to develop their skills in the classroom with the partnership of a coach and Mentor Teacher. After their AmeriCorps residency year, members will then go on to serve the students of Kansas City for many years.

There are numerous ways  to make a difference in people’s lives through helping them survive disasters, improving the quality of urban education, and helping provide nutritional assistance to families in need.  Apply to be an AmeriCorps member at www.americorps.gov and browse several opportunities to serve communities in need of a helping hand.  You can also learn more about joining The Educator Academy as a Teacher Resident at www.educator-academy.org/the-program.
